Waitus (Doug)'s Story
I went into the US Marines straight out of High School. Spent most of my time at Camp LeJeune,NC and Charleston, SC. One trip to Viet Nam, but got sent home, because I was an only son. Got out of Marines went to Western Carolina briefly. Left there went on Police Force for 5 years. Was also a volunteer fireman and EMT on the Life Saving Crew. Worked in the Funeral Home business for awhile. Decided to go back into the military. Joined the US Army and stayed there for 18 more years. Traveled to many states as a Army Recruiter. Traveled to many countries, Germany, Saudi, Iraq, Kuwait. Went back to Ft Riley Kansas home of the BIG RED ONE. Went to Desert Shield and Desert Storm as a Military Intelligence NCO. Was also door gunner on XO's helicopter. Did some flying in Cobras and Hueys, when pilots would let me. Was a Tank Commander on the M-1 Abrams tank for 5 years. After...Expand for more
Desert Storm I was selected as Rear Detachment Battalion Commander for 5 years. I spent 7 years at Ft Riley, Kansas. Helped start the Relay for Life in Junction City outside of Ft Riley after my wife was diagnoised with stage 3 Breast cancer. Have been a team captain for Relay for Life for 23 years. My wife lost her battle after 10 years, but oddly enough she died from a heart attack, caused by all the chemo and other medications.Am remarried after being a widower for awhile. Working for US Army as Human Resources Specialist. Finally got by BS in Business Management with a minor in Procurement and Acquisition Management. As dumb as I was in High School, I did quite well in college.Have lived in Germany, Hickory & Statesville North Carolina, Des Moines, Iowa, Ft Knox, Ky, and Ft Riley, Ks. Currently live in Alabama, where football is the name of the Game...ROLL TIDE!!!
